With the new Fast and Furious movie just being released in theaters Paul Walkers name is everywhere.
I am a huge fan of The Fast and the Furious Franchise as well as Paul Walker. He was one of those rare celebrities who appeared to be really grounded. He was a man of many talents and Jiu Jitsu happened to be one of them.
According to Ricardo "Franjinha" Miller he started training Paul in 2004 when the actor was 31. Paul had earned his Brown Belt when he passed away on November 30, 2013.
Anyone who is belted from a legitimate Jiu Jitsu instructor will tell you
earning belts in this sport is by far harder than earning your belts in other martial arts. It takes a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and hours of training. Jiu Jitsu is really a brotherhood. When you get your next belt it is a rite of passage. Everyone in the gym that day knows how hard you have worked to get to the next level, either they have been there already, or they are trying to get there. It is a chest swelling, pride filled moment.
Ricardo "Franjinha" Miller quoted Paul as saying "I will get my black belt, even if I need to get it in my coffin". He did just that, on December 11, 2013 he was awarded his honorary black belt.
I have watched some of his training videos. He was very good at Jiu Jitsu. He was a brown belt, which is a high rank. He had just not gotten to the black belt point before he was called home.
He had many fans that loved him for the person he was. He was respected in the art of Jiu Jitsu, as an actor, and many called him a friend. Rest in Peace. Gone to early, but never forgotten!
Paul Walker 1973-2013
